Responsible Cultivation
In Belgium, Conference pears are known for sustainable cultivation that adheres to integrated pest management practices. These are based on three principles:
To combat aphids ecologically, predatory insects and parasitic wasps are used. Pheromone traps are also hung on trees to prevent male and female moths from laying eggs and producing new insects. Additionally, pruning pear trees in spring helps branches dry properly after rain, reducing the risk of mold.
Monitoring
Crops are constantly monitored to detect pests and diseases as early as possible, as well as water consumption. Thanks to smart farming techniques, growers know exactly when and how much water trees need, avoiding waste. Drones can also be used to fly over orchards and assess the health of the trees and their watering needs.
Treatment
Treatment of the pear orchards is carried out only when (economically) necessary, and only when a certain threshold is exceeded. Only approved pesticides are used to combat weeds, pests, and diseases. This ensures that the pears sold are pesticide-free. An independent lab conducts strict inspections and checks the pears for residues. Conference growers do their utmost to minimize the use of plant protection products.
