Conference is by far the most widely grown variety in northwestern Europe. Discovered in 1844, it was given the name “Conference” at the 1895 British National Pear Conference. From then on it quickly gained an important status in European pear cultivation. In addition to its good taste, its success is mainly due to its excellent shelf life. In recent decades, new cultivation methods have further improved the quality of the Conference, so that today it holds the undisputed first place in Belgian and Dutch pear cultivation. Today the Conference pear occupies about 70 percent of the area under pear cultivation in Belgium and the Netherlands. Conference is also the leading variety in England and is also widely grown in France, Italy and Spain.
